Course Overview

All topics covered on our Diploma Course focus on ensuring students gain the essential skills and knowledge required to practice as Interior Designers in any capacity anywhere in the world.
The course will cover every step of the Interior Design process from obtaining the initial client brief through to implementation. Students will also gain experience of working on live projects both locally and internationally.
Some of the design related lectures will be delivered by our UK based designers, whilst business seminars will be handled by a guest motivational speaker and our CEO Michael Banjo.
Students will have access to our online resource centre where they can access course notes, lectures & assignments as well as chat with other students to share experiences. Course is delivered by classroom attendance or online study.

COURSE OUTLINE

Week 1 – Induction Seminar

face32  This is an introduction to the course and interior design process by Michael Banjo, CEO of Decor Group. Lecture by Guest Speaker – How to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the course.

Week 2 AutoCAD & Sketch Up

prospectus_applicationform_newAn introduction to both design software packages. AutoCAD is essential for drawing up plans and space planning, whilst Sketch up is a useful tool to help create 3D models. Learn how both software interact with each other in interior design.

Week 3 – Briefs, Site Survey & Meeting Notes

Learn how to complete an accurate site survey. Also learn steps to follow when obtaining a brief from the client, important questions that must be asked and information to obtain.

Week 4 – AutoCAD & Sketch Up

Further training will be provided on how to use both software packages.

Week 5 – InDesign, Photoshop & Presentation Skills

tutorialThis is an introduction to Adobe InDesign & PhotoShop software packages. InDesign is a useful tool for creating client presentations, whilst PhotoShop is useful for finishing touches to 3D visuals.

Week 6 – AutoCAD & Space Planning

Further training and development will be given in relation to conducting a site survey.

Week 11 – Concept Presentation Development

Learn how to develop interior design concepts utilising a design brief from the client and how to present concepts to the client.

Week 12 – Soft Furnishings, Joinery & Furniture

We will provide lectures on how the contractors apply themselves to their trade. Learn about what makes a good contractor and the relevant regulations for each trade. Understand the information contractors require from you and what information you require from them.

Week 13 – Electrics & Decorating

We will provide lectures on how the contractors apply themselves to their trade. Learn about what makes a good contractor and the relevant regulations for each trade. Understand the information contractors require from you and what information you require from them.

Week 14 – Flooring & Sanitary Ware

We will provide lectures on how the contractors apply themselves to their trade. Learn about what makes a good contractor and the relevant regulations for each trade. Understand the information contractors require from you and what information you require from them..

Week 15 – Product Presentation & Colour Schemes

Learn about various interior finishes as well as colours and how they interact with each other.

Week 16 – Concept Presentation

Learn how to present your design concepts and gain constructive feedback from clients.

Week 17 – Final Presentation Development

Students will learn how to develop their final designs for clients.

Week 18 – AutoCAD & Working Drawings

Students will learn how to complete accurate working drawings for use by contractors using AutoCAD.

Week 19 – Project Management & Business Set Up

Learn how to put together a program of works for a project and gain an understanding of what is required to manage a project. This module will cover all of the stages that need to be followed to establish your own interior design practice. Learn how to set up your business with focus on business planning, strategy, sales, marketing and managing expenses.

Week 20 – Project Costing

Students will learn how to put together the cost for a project and how to present the costs to the client.

Week 21 – Final Design Presentation

Students will learn how to present their final designs to clients.

Week 22 – Project Costing & Working Drawings

Students will continue to learn how to complete accurate working drawings for use by contractors using AutoCAD.

Week 23 – Project Management & Business Set Up

Further training and development in relation to creating a programme of works and running your own agency.

Week 24 – Seminar

This is a repeat of the Design Process with Michael Banjo CEO and a lecture by Guest Speaker. Students will utilise the knowledge they have gained over the past 23 weeks. Seminar will be with new intakes so students will have the opportunity to network with each other.
Weeks 25 to 44

Live practical group projects

This unit enables students to work on at least 3 live projects (UK & Nigeria based projects) that require complete interior design with at least 1 project that will require project management. Students will be divided into groups for this unit and will focus on specific parts of the design process for each project. All students will be expected to have worked on all stages of the design process at the end of this unit. Students will have access (subject to availability) to our design studio throughout this unit in Lagos for group meetings and support from our tutors, staff & UK based designers. A professional interior designer will always have to work with other stakeholders to deliver a project and this unit gives practical grounding and knowledge on how to work with a team.

Week 45 to 47

Final Essay

week 45Students will need to submit a 3000 word essay on what they have personally contributed in each live practical group project in the previous unit. They will need to identify where they feel their strengths are and areas they feel need developing.

Week 48 – Graduation Ceremony

Students will be invited to formally receive their International Diploma in Interior Design as well as affiliate status with Decor & Rainbow. They will be able to meet new sets of students at this ceremony and start networking.   grad

Entry Requirements: No previous art or design experience is necessary. However students must be at least 18 year old and computer literate.

March & September Annually March 2016 Program Term dates – Saturday 19th March 2016 (Week 1), W/c 4th April 2016 to W/c 12th December 2016 (Weeks 2 to 38), W/c 9th January 2017 to W/c 13th March 2017 (Weeks 39 to 48)

Weekend Course

Saturday Lecture times: 11:30am to 3pm Sunday Lecture times: 1:30pm to 5pm


 

Course Duration

48 weeks in total. 24 weeks classroom training/home study (Attendance required one day per week at Decor & Rainbow Design Studio), 21 weeks working on a minimum of 3 Local and International practical group projects, as well as a submission of final essay (3 Weeks).essay.

Classroom, home & group based assignments as well as final essay.

Location

Decor & Rainbow Design Studio, 2 Opebi Road, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. (There is also an online option for students who live outside Lagos or unable to commute from Lagos.)

Attendance

Students will be registered to attend the design studio on a specific day each week (Weekend lectures are also available). All topics covered on the course are essential and it is therefore important that students attend all lectures. Any change in training days must be agreed beforehand with Decor & Rainbow.
